About

What is Wally's?

Wally's Place, in its most basic idea, was established to provide people with a healthy and delicious alternative to the current trend of eateries. It has become well known in the food world that bigger is not always better and that quality should prevail over quantity. That is why Wally's strives to deliver a better brewed cup of coffee, a better tasting bagel, and the freshest sandwiches made from better meats and cheeses.

Wally's Place bakes, boils, steams or sautées almost everything it sells. Every morning you can get a bagel hot from the oven topped with your favorite cream cheese or egg creation. Or perhaps your sweet tooth will draw you towards the many Wally's bakery creations including giant cookies, muffins, and other daily specials and creations. Either way you want it, Wally's Place was designed with the customer in mind. That is, you don't have to settle for unhealthy fried or overly sugared breakfast and lunch items. Try Wally's instead for virtually the same price but with better, faster service, and you will be pleasantly satisfied.

Why Wally's?

Wally's was established in early 2008 by Matthew Bartle, a long time visitor and now resident of South Hero. While Matthew was living in South Hero during the summer of 2007, he decided that it was unacceptable that the Islands did not have a bagel shop. So, with his dream of opening a restaurant, Matthew began designing, constructing, inventing and building the Champlain Islands first Bagel shop. When it came to naming the store, who better to name it after than his grandfather, the man who discovered this beautiful town on behalf of the family in 1971 when he bought property and later retired in South Hero.

Walter Niebling

Walter Niebling was a beloved member of the South Hero Congregational Church. He and his wife Shirley moved to South Hero in 1980 and were active in many area of church and community life. Wally had a deep concern for the residents of Grand Isle County who had needs that could be met by church effort. He was the driving force in starting a basket for the collection of non-perishable foods for distribution where needed. After his death in 1990 it was decided to call the this Church mission effort "Wally's Basket,"as a memorial to a special man who is fondly remembered for his caring, sincerity, and generosity.

Matthew and his Grandfather share many things in common - especially the gift of giving. Wally's place currently donates to three local charities including the Food Shelf in the Islands.
